Their Story

part 1: katie's side of the beginning part of the story | in may of 2010, i had just moved back home from my first year of college. things had all kind of gone awry, and long story short: i had approximately one friend left to show for it all: kylee. the two of us had the most glorious summer. we did all the things. we laughed harder then i had ever laughed before. we had so many spontaneous, memorable experiences, and it was just what i needed. as fall began approaching, and school was working it's way back into our daily routine, kylee's best friend of years and years (tracey) announced that she was engaged.

part 2: devin's side of the beginning part of the story | devin had been home from his lds mission in new england for a few years now, and found himself tired of the dating scene. he had recently ended a serious relationship, and was dating casually, without really finding what he was looking for, so he stopped trying. he threw himself into his photography, began branding himself and very quickly filled his calendar with sessions. it wasn't long after this happened, that his next door neighbor, and lifelong friend (tracey) announced that she was engaged, and asked devin if he would be her photographer.

part 3: katie's side of the wedding part of the story | the wedding planning went by in a blur. as the weeks went by, tracey would excitedly show us her engagement photos, and bridals - they were beautiful, and kylee and tracey would occasionally bring up the fact that tracey's photographer, her neighbor, was really cute. kylee had called dibs on him, which didn't phase me. i had been dating a lot and meeting new people without any real intentions, but having a lot of fun. but before we knew it, the bachelorette party was over and tracey was about to become a wife. it was October already, and the wedding day was here. for some reason i do not remember, and most certainly regret, i walked into that wedding on the arm of a boy. we found the table where kylee and a few of our other friends were sitting and joined them. we spent the night eating food, talking and celebrating tracey's new marriage, but it was getting cold. and fast.

part 4: devin's side of the wedding part of the story | this was just another photography gig for devin. nothing out of the ordinary, other than the fact that he knew the couple very well. he was more comfortable that way, so it made for a pretty easy going day. and there at the reception, as he was just thinking about how much he hated wedding receptions, something caught his eye. he watched from across the lawn as a girl walked in, and immediately knew he had to get to know her. he didn't know what it was, but he couldn't deny it. he began thinking of ways he could approach her. things he could say, what would be best, and decided to go for it. as he walked up to the table where she was sitting, he noticed that she was with someone. what a bust. but he was already too close to the table, and couldn't turn back now.

part 5: katie's side of the first time they met part of the story | i had used tracey's wedding as an excuse to wear the one single fancy dress that i own, and at this point in the evening, we had all pulled out our own cameras and were taking pictures. just as kylee's date had snapped a photo of her, myself, and tracey's sister, the photographer walked up. "mind if i get one of those with my camera?" he said. we posed once more for him, and off he went. it was time to cut the cake. kylee leaned over to me and quietly reminded me that she had told me the photographer was cute, and asked if i agreed. i gave her a look, letting her know that i wasn't about to admit i was attracted to someone when i was there with a date, because that would be rude. but the truth was that he was cute. she was right. after the cake was cut and the bouquet was thrown, i made a quick exit. the night was much colder than i had expected, and i failed to bring a jacket. and that was it. the wedding was over, and on with my life i went.

kudos to Devin, the most amazing photographer ever

part 6: devin's side of the first time they spoke part of the story | although tracey's wedding was weeks ago, devin still couldn't get the girl out of his head. he knew nothing about her, but he knew kylee. sort of. she had just added him as a friend on facebook, and he decided that since he didn't have anything to lose, he might as well ask about the girl, so he did. kylee had made it very clear that she was single, and even gave devin her phone number. encouraging him to ask her out. although this was all good news to him, he did not take the number. he instead began talking with her through facebook, and in their first conversation, asked for her number, which he got. he was pleased with himself, and excited about the prospect of this new friendship, and already knew he wanted it to be something more.

part 7: katie's side of the first time they spoke part of the story | one day, a little out of the blue, kylee sent me a message on facebook. she asked if i remembered devin, the photographer at the wedding. yes, i do. she told me he was asking about me. i got a excited, and was very flattered. i was enjoying dating, and meeting new people, so i was very open to getting to know him. we began talking shortly after, and when he asked for my phone number, i didn't hesitate to give it to him. he was so nice. so inherently good. it was refreshing.

part 8: the rest is history | we talked constantly. for days and days, we were always in contact. we quickly discovered that we were both taking the same math course, from different professors, at UVU. we both admitted to being horrible at math, and needing all the help we could get, and that opened up the opportunity to finally get together. our first date. we met in the campus library and did math homework. i spent 4 hours getting ready, and was more nervous then i had ever been for a first date. devin says he was just excited. he had a good feeling about me and was anxious to see what it was all about. we didn't get too far with our math homework that night, but ended up in a small cafe with a few of his closest friends, eating grilled cheese sandwiches, talking for hours, and playing games on his phone.

the first photo we took together. we had only been dating for a few weeks.

from then on, we saw each other every single day. we clicked in that way where it feels like you've known this other person for your entire life. it was this overwhelming realization that i had finally found my person. at this point, i wasn't thinking about marriage, but i had found my true best friend. a perfect match for me. someone who understood how i worked. it was incredible, and devin felt the same. except he was already thinking about marriage. we became so comfortable so quickly, and the 4 months that we dated, i had spent in this state of shock. had i really found this man? is he really as good as i feel like he is? he was. and i knew. i knew i wanted to be with him for as long as he would have me, and it wasn't long after that we knew there was going to be a wedding.

i remember making the decision with devin that we wanted to get married. it came up so naturally, and it felt so normal to take that next step, as serious as it was. i remember the night that devin and i sat down with my parents, and he asked for my dad's blessing. my parents were thrilled, and we began planning right away.

now | it seems that in the four years that we've been married, we've already done so much living. we have taken risks, gone on adventures, made big, life decisions and have done all of it together. it has been the most incredible experience, and we still have so much more experiencing to do. we couldn't be happier to be living the life that we do, with the blessings we have, surrounded by the people we love, doing the things we are passionate about.
